Interview
(We recently have done some interviews for publications that were in Europe, but the final versions were in languages other than English, so here is a English transcript).
Where does your bands name Eversham comes from?
Joshua : Eversham is our last name. Joel, Mitchell and I have been playing in bands together since we were in High School, and we were playing in a band called “Lost Pioneers” which went on an indefinite break, we were unsure what to do in the future. We had plenty of instrumental music already recorded, and so we decided to be a instrumental band and call ourselves after our family name, Eversham.
Does you have a written band agreement or you are mates and you doesn’t need that?
Joshua : Since Joel and I are brothers, and we have known Mitchell since we were in High School, we are already pretty close, we don’t need any band agreements. Our main focus is to just write some music that we are proud of it, and everything follows from that.
Who are your fan base? Like i found you on Youtube in April 2011.
Joshua: They could be anyone and anybody.
Do you write your own songs?
Joshua : Every song is written by us. Our music is created in many different ways, but there are often two main ways we write. Someone will have an idea, a riff, a sound, or a certain structure in mind, and than they will share it with the rest of us, and we will than start working on it as a band. The other way is just through band jamming – we will jam for hours and often we stumble across some cool ideas that way, than we work through it and turn it into a song.
What are your inspirations for creating a new song?
Joel: Inspiration for songs is more often than not born out of accidental situations. Though sometimes one of us might have something of an epiphany, songs usually come about through us just playing around on the guitar or piano or even the drums as a surprising amount of our songs are created through rhythmic ideas. However once the initial idea is discovered songs can develop in one of two ways. Either through jamming as a band or when one of us will takes the initiative to sit down and write the song out in it’s entirety. Once the process is on it’s way the original inspiration usually disappears rather quickly and it comes down to us working hard and drawing our energy from our love of creating music. It is in that process of creation that the real inspiration is found.
What are your songs about?
Joel : Nothing and everything. Its mostly written for the sake of the music itself.
What do you expect from your listeners to feel when they listening to your songs?
Joel: We don’t really have any expectations over what we want listeners to feel when they’re listening to our songs. Though there is a general direction within the mood of the song, the nature of the music being instrumental leaves a certain ambiguity over any inferences from the music however we do hope it is to some degree, aesthetically pleasing.
Who are your musical influences?
Joel : Though there are an enormity of influences that we all have the five most influential bands to us as a group, that have most directly affected our own sound as a band would be Led Zeppelin, Tool, The Mars Volta, Sigur Ros and Trent Reznor.
A little bir off-topic then. We saw on your facebook page, you like Skyrim. What is your characters type?
Joel: A Nord 2H Warrior.
And you finished main quest linse?
Joel: Yes, over a period of many hours I eventually succeeded in completing not only the main quest line but the companions, thieves guild, mages college, dark brotherhood and the imperial/storm cloak quest lines as well.
What kind of video games are you playing?
Joel: First person shooters and the odd role-playing game.
What are your favorite games in this genre?
Joel: Cod, Halo and Elder Scrolls.
What are you doing when you doesn’t record new sound? (Regular days of course)
Joel: Well Josh has a bachelor of economics, and if often found reading in a darken library, going on adventures and camping trips in the wild, playing the piano or composing.
I am a university student who studies economics and analytical philosophy, though when I’m not spending my time studying I play xbox, read or just hang out with friends.
It’s hard to say where Mitchell is at any one time as he leads somewhat nomadic lifestyle, frequently taking surf trips around the east coast of Australia or gallivanting across north Europe on a Scandinavian adventure.
Your first album and Josh’s EP released a while ago. So, what are you planing to do now?
Joel: We just finished recording an album that is currently being mixed and mastered. Depending on whether or not the mixing process encounters any problems it should be scheduled for realise sometime over the next couple of months. Originally when we set out to record there was a general vision of creating a cacophony of sound that was aggressively noisy and loud yet juxtaposed with melodic undertones that was intended to give the music an almost clichéd epic feel to it. However as the process eventuated, though the songs still involved a certain intensity and tension, the general direction shifted towards a simpler and cleaner sound than we had anticipated. We are pretty excited about this release however, as the subsequent recording sessions encapsulated an organic and natural process that has, at least in our opinion, resulted in a better array songs than anything we’ve ever done before.
